Jeffrey Hughes makes Northern Ireland Senior Debut

Jeffrey HughesAll at Larne Youth wish to congratulate ex-club player Jeffrey Hughes on being the first club player to wear the full Northern Ireland international jersey when he played against Uraguay in a friendly international.

Larne Youth have had club players in all the international teams, under 17, 19 and 21 plus schoolboys and amateur league select but have had to wait on that first full cap.

Jeffrey joined Larne Youth at eleven and played for five seasons. In his early years Jeffrey was a budding centre forward and got more than his fair share of goals.

Jeffrey at LincolnAfter a few seasons he began to play left back but in his later years he perfected the specialist role of left wing back.

His years at Larne Youth proved to be successful, collecting a County Representative medal, Milk Cup Medal and a Lisburn League Cup medal.

He was a player who looked comfortable on the ball, was fast and had an excellent left foot.

All at Larne Youth look forward to seeing him when he returns home and know his speedy rise to dizzy heights will not change him in any way.

We would also like to pass on our congratulations and best wishes to Jeff on his selection for the Northern Ireland Under 21 team to play Romania in Urziceni on Tuesday as part of the UEFA 2007 qualifiers.

3rd Generation Sports Facilities

Local training facilities could well be improved if the joint funding application for a full size 3rd Generation Grass Sports Facility with 8 changing areas by Larne Youth and Seacourt Community Council is successful.

A consultation evening of interested parties and potential user groups was held on Wednesday 9th August and a presentation was made by consultants for the project McClure Watters, the meeting was well attended by 18 user groups including sports clubs, schools, businesses and community groups interested in using this full sized pitch for training and games.

The project if it gets the go-ahead will cost around £800,000 and will serve a variety of sports and the new facility will be based on the Mid Ulster Sports Arena at Cookstown which is currently the only 3rd Generation pitch in Northern Ireland.

We envisage that if possible we will use renewable energy through a wind
turbine to run the floodlight and other facilities. Member of the Management Committee for the project John Workman stated “being only the second of its kind in Northern Ireland the boost for Larne and the Borough, not to mention the local sports clubs and other users, is immence. It opens up the possibility to attract the top teams in their respective sports to Larne”. The process being undertaken is part of the Business Case that needs to be submitted to funders and will reflect the need for such a facility. Other parties who had indicated an interest beforehand but were unable to attend on the night will be contacted in the next couple of weeks.
